Shudder at the depths of my prog musical geekery
Going to see my #1 favorite RUSH perform this Sunday, and Asia next Saturday (mostly because Steve Howe and Carl Palmer are on the tour, and the band will be playing selections from Asia, Yes, ELP, King Crimson, and even the Buggles!!!) Sorry, but when it comes to good old prog rock, I lose all sense of perspective. (So, what are YOUR musical guilty pleasures?)

Aside from that self-indulgence, I've learned that my trip to Lala land has been pushed back another month at least, so C.O.G. will be concentrating on band activities, including our ongoing quest for the new Lab Girl, recording, and booking another big show in New Orleans. I am currently working on cutting up some video footage from our last concert. (If I'm truly motivated I may try to get the whole concert cut together.) While there were little technical glitches everywhere, it was a pretty strong performance, well recorded, and we absolutely need some new footage of our stage show to show off. I'll post this stuff for public viewing as I finish it.

In other news, MEET THE THEREMIN PLAYING CAT!!!

I'm a prog fan as well. lately I have been listening to a lot of Gabriel era Genesis, and I am going through the first half dozen or so Yes albums picking songs for an IPod playlist. The last few records from the first run King Crimson make me very happy. Middle period Tull (the stuff with Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond on bass) makes me happier than most music. I even saw Rush twice when they were touring for 2112. And all of this becomes a little odd when you consider that I started making music in punk bands in the late 70s. The guys in my various bands were always a little puzzled that I had Love Bites, London's Calling AND The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

NICE. You're fortunate to be old enough to have seen that Rush in their prime. As for variety, I feel the same way. If it rocks, I'll listen to it - end of story!

I never saw them headline ... but I wish that I had. Saw Tull on the War Child tour at the Rainbow Theatre in London (Finchley actually). Even saw UK open for Tull here in Iowa.

And yeah, good music is good music, who cares about genre.

I'm not as proud about this one, but I saw the very last show ELP did with the full orchestra.

Wow, both of those performances sound really fun.

Indeed! However, the Asia concert is 1/4 the price of the Rush one.

I guess Asia isn't quite as famous as Rush... :)

I don't think I could get my boyfriends to come with me to either of those. But I'd go!

You've always been a rather free thinker where music was concerned!

With that huge catalog of music, do you think they'll get around to playing some GTR material? I would love to go see 'em, but I might still be in the Smokey Mountains. Maybe I'll get to pet a bear. Maybe I'll come back with a hook for a hand.

ELP? Is that something beyond ELO, perhaps? Even if it's just a typo, it's cool.

And if that show ends up in June, I might just be in a financial position to show up! (One of my minor ambitions for quite some time now...)

Unlike ELO, ELP is the abbreviation of the last names of the three musicians: Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer, who was also Asia's original drummer.

Well, unfortunately, I think it's already multiplying! (Actually, they were out of larges, so we got two mediums. If you don't want them, we'll give you back your money.)

Hmmm I know there's also a band with a theremin playing rat -- rivalry in more ways than one.

Hahahaha - there was actually a local punk band with a theremin playing rat, but the poor rodent passed away last year just before they performed with us!

It's probably the same band - I can't imagine there was more than one. The Hatemoms or something like that if I remember right. Shame about the rat though.
