Current music:Doctor Who theme

A new week!
A new week is a good goal for starting new projects, or at least picking up where I left off. I've finished a few personal projects - the Garaj Mahal ADAT tape transfers, assembly of Jeannine's new BBQ grill, and the prototype of Ralph's remote Stedicam focus control project. Finally finished watching the 2008 season of my favorite show, Doctor Who (and what a big, loud, silly end to an overall good season.) Sci-Fi channel viewers will find out what I mean in a couple weeks. BTW we're learning the theme to the show for concert performance!!!

Now it's time to gear up some new projects, like the new material for the upcoming gig, and BOOKING a New Orleans gig for our big 100th Lecture (BTW, I did a little accounting, and the Babelcon gig will be our 99th, NOT our 100th.) Do I go for August or September? Cool weather will probably not arrive till late October, and by that time, we'll be into our annual House of Shock season.

I need to finish modding my Theremin for the upcoming show (sunk the main antenna down into the case, and need to do something about the volume antenna as well, also I need to add blue landing lights for it!) I need to freshen up some backscreen concert graphics as well, as we're performing a bunch of songs we haven't performed onstage in years, and some of them have Dr. A Pentatonic in the background scenery!

Today I finally ordered a new battery for my beloved Scooba cleaning robot, as the old battery bit the big one (I did tear the old battery apart, and need to look into reconditioning it, which will be tricky as the cells are a pretty odd form factor.)

*hand raise for August* But I'm coming either way!

Pinkerton-Filbert metacrisis! What happens if we stare directly into the time vortex decide we don't feel like regenerating and use our handy spare body parts instead? Let's try it on Filbert!

Only 99th? Aw hell.

Well, I can still use the outfit I spent $70 on today at the show anyway. Dunno if I'll make #100, though- there might be conflicts or financial difficulties by that time.

Anyway, see you next weekend!

No worries, this is going to be a fun night, I promise! Since we're playing the DANCE, we're playing a longer show than we ever normally would - and that means more classic C.O.G. songs.

As for #100, I'll let you know when I've booked that. It'll probably be a more conventional club gig here in New Orleans.

I shouldn't have a scheduling conflict either way...so I vote for August....the sooner the better for COG shows!

I know I've brought this up several times so I apologize if it's getting tedious, but I still want you guys to play here in Huntsville. I am putting together a show for next April (long time off, i know but I try to do my booking pretty far in advance - I'm currently booked up well into September) and I would love for you guys to be my headliner. I can offer you a guarantee vs. percentage of the door contract but I need to know what sort of guarantee you would need to make it worth your trouble and what your sound requirements would be.

The other bands I'm looking at for this gig are:

Yip Yip

The Show is the Rainbow?

and a local act - Thomas Function

We'd love to! And I like the look of the bill. I'm OK with the idea of a guarantee or split, but with gas prices being what they are, you'll need to cover our travel/lodging expenses to make the trip worth our while.

Our technical requirements (as of last year, but still current) are written up here.

Would a $400 guarantee vs. 40% of the door be enough to cover your expenses?

The tech rider is no problem if you don't mind self powered Mackies and subs for mains. They're usually more than sufficient for the 300 capacity venue. We even have a very large screen already installed and a sturdy projector shelf hanging from the ceiling since we often host screenings in the room.

I haven't confirmed a date yet, but we're probably looking at April 3rd or 4th.

The travel price ultimately hinges on the price of fuel at the time of the gig. I can't predict what gas will cost per gallon next April. Let me talk to my colleagues about this...

As for the PA, self powered Mackies are fine, and the presence of a screen helps, in that we don't have to haul and set up ours.

What has attendance been like at your bookings this year?

Looking (way) forward to it!

I understand about travel expenses - particularly with $5/gallon gas looming on the horizon. We can negotiate that farther down the road (typed that before realizing the pun).

I haven't booked many shows personally - I'm usually just the tech guy. The last show I did book was MC Chris and we had about 300 people at $10. Generally speaking, a big show in the room will draw 150 to 200 people. I'm planning an $8 cover this time around so if we get 150 to show you will beat the guarantee. Our legal capacity for the room is actually close to 400 but it gets pretty cramped at 250 because of the layout so we would probably not exceed that.

To give you some background on myself - I've been working in audio and video for over 24 years and doing live sound for over 18 years in venues all over north Alabama. For the past 9 years I've been working as a contractor for a sound company doing events like street festivals, church gigs, fundraisers and park concerts. I'm getting tired of hauling all that equipment around though, so these days I'm leaning more toward my house gig at the Flying Monkey - a non-profit arts center. I am one of the founding members and I sit on the board of directors. We have been around for about 8 years and opened our new theater at the end of last year.

Hell yeah. I started out as a sound man 22 years ago and I still do sound a few times a year for deserving friends (like I'm doing tonight at One Eyed Jacks.) I know what you mean about hauling equipment around; the powered Mackies were a good choice of yours!

This place sounds fantastic. Any way I could see a picture of what it looks like inside, preferably with a band? Looking forward to playing up there!

I can't find your email address on my 'puter - gimme one and I'll send you some pics. :)

If you add [info]theverticalbar you can see some of her pics (some of which I'll send you) and videos of events there. She and her husband have a record store there (Vertical House Records), perform in some of the shows, and also have shows in their store.

But I'll take your advice and add her as well!

Good news: Looks like I'll make Babelcon after all.

Bad news: That's because I won't be going to Libertycon this weekend. My partner in crime had to drop out due to a family health emergency, and bachelor party deposits mean I can't quite swing going solo.

If you need a hand w/ setting up @ Babelcon, you've got my cell number.
