Rhythm guitar on 'The Power'
Tonight, Dr. A was in the lab, evaluating his new POD XT. He'd been going back and forth between it and his old POD 2 for weeks, trying to evaluate the new device's sound. The POD XT looks roughly the same, but everything in it is x2. Twice as many user banks, twice as many amp models, twice as many effects, consumes twice the electricity of the old one, gets twice as hot during operation... I could go on, but after rigging up an A/B switch that allowed for easy comparison, we both concluded that:
1> The 'combo' setting on the unit was pretty much useless, and the 'mic'd cabinet' model would have to be used.
2> The global compressor setting greatly weakened the attack of any sound and added a lot of noise
3> The unit really favors the midrange, making any guitar sound very mix-friendly, but making deeply mid-scooped tones extremely hard to achieve.
That said, the POD XT does sound great when set up properly, and has lots more sounds than the old POD 2. Dr. A will probably keep it and switch over to it in time for the next show.
Once the sound was properly honed, Dr. A proceeded to lay down his harmony and rhythm tracks for 'I Have the Power.'
